And so Lil' Red set off with her basket of goodies on her way to Grandmother's house, but who should she happen to meet in the woods? Why the Big Bad Wolf of course! Meet Lil' Red - Stacy Iest Hsu's first -- and certainly not last -- fabric line for Moda.
This fabric depicts it all. From Lil' Red, Grandmother's House, the Big Bad Wolf, whimsical trees, tulips and flowers, down to the mushrooms and blades of grass.
And if the prints aren't cute as can be, there's this darling panel. How sweet to have your own Lil' Red doll (complete with cape), matching blanket, pillow and even a big bad wolf??
This really is one of the sweetest lines, and what a story it has to tell. Remember it's new to the shop and new means -- Precuts and yardage at a discounted rate for ONE WEEK from Friday, January 8th through the 15th. See that little button over there at the top right of where you are reading that says "My Etsy Shop"? Well, click on it and pick up yours while there is still some to be had.

Bloc Loc Rulers
Time for another update. I wasn't sure if these new rulers were going to arrive or not, but it appears they have shipped and will make it just in time. So let me introduce to you Bloc Loc Rulers!
I was introduced to these rulers at the Small Town Quilt Show in a class by Melissa Corry of Happy Quilting. Recently I taught a class on half square triangles at Quilt Therapy Day and how important it is to square them up. I know it's a pain, tedious, time consuming, etc., etc., but your projects turn out so much more accurate if your blocks are squared up -- right???? (I am just going to pretend that you are reading this, nodding your head and agreeing with me) Well -- the new Bloc Loc Ruler makes this task fun, quick, easy, accurate and I could go on and on, but I will wait to show you at the demonstration and you can try it for yourself!
This is a picture of one of the many sizes of half square triangle rulers Bloc Loc puts out. The ruler locks on to that diagonal seam and makes it so simple to square up. Your ruler won't rock and slip .... and oh I just want to jump through the computer with the fabric and ruler in hand and just show you in person. Come out and try one of these, they really will change your life and the way you view half square triangles forever.
Bloc Loc also puts out other rulers, for instance have you tried making half rectangles? I haven't tried them, but these will also be making a personal appearance at the Open House with me and we can play with them together! Doesn't this quilt look so cool and look at how accurate those points are!
Come out and learn more about Bloc Loc. I will have rulers and a limited number of their patterns available. You can try these for yourself, no purchase required (that's my disclaimer because I know you'll want one or more ...)
This demonstration will be Saturday morning at 11:00 ... so just to recap ... here's the information.
Tiny Seamstress trunk show - 10:00 a.m.
Bloc Loc ruler demo - 11:00 a.m.
Quick Curve ruler demo and small trunk show - 1:00 p.m.
Missouri Star tutorials - 3:00 p.m. (I will be demonstrating a quick and easy way to do a table runner or quilt)
There will be small demos throughout the day for other items. Projects or blocks are made up for your viewing pleasure using Five and Dime, Spare Change, Lemoyne Star, and Missouri Star demos.
In addition, Antique Recreation will be there with some fantastic items. How about some random give aways throughout the day, new fabric, clearance items, refreshments, fun, friends, laughter ....
What else can I do to get you out? Oh yes, there will be one fantastic drawing at the end of the Open House. You can get a ticket for the drawing for this by 1) bringing a copy of a flyer from one of the stores in Shelley, Rexburg, Rigby or Idaho Falls; 2) bringing the ad from the Jefferson Star; 3) sharing this post on facebook with your friends; or 4) any purchase of $30.00 or more at the Open House will get you additional tickets (i.e. $30.00 1 ticket, $60.00 2 tickets, $90.00 3 tickets .... and so forth). A photo of the grand prize will be posted soon ... so check back.
That's about it for today ... off to finish quilting, organize, pack ... and try not to forget anything!

This is a fun pinwheel quilt I found online which uses their half rectangle ruler. A very fun and different twist.
And they also have a kite in a square ruler. This quilt is AMAZING and uses the Bloc Loc ruler. Woo hoo! I might even feel like I could attempt this project.

Holiday Open House
Wow -- I'm really on a blogging roll lately! (If only I could keep it up -- but I know what this month has in store for Olie & Evie). And while we are on that note, I have a great big HUGE announcement. Rumor has it word is already spreading around town -- that would be the town of Lewisville, Idaho -- that there is going to be a HUGE Holiday Open House. Yep, the rumors are true, and here is the flyer to prove it.
So, there you have it ladies. A Holiday Open House at the Lewisville Community Center. There will be lots of seating and best of all air conditioning in case the weather is really warm. And if it's cold, well an even better reason to come on out and join us. Beginning at 10:00 a.m. Tiffany Jenkins of Tiny Seamstress Designs is going to WOW us by showing off her designs in a trunk show. Patterns are great, but there is nothing like seeing the finished project in person.
I (Evie) will be doing demonstrations at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. (and probably any time in between that). You are thinking what is she going to demo? Well, I hate to ruin the surprise, but I will be showing you how to use the Quick Curve Ruler created by Sew Kind of Wonderful that will change your life! And if that isn't enough, I will be showing you some brand new rulers for half square triangles (and other quilting designs) that will change your life forever! I am serious -- you will be really impressed and won't want to miss it. And last but not least, I will be doing a fun demonstration for a quick table runner (or however big you want to make it). And another hint -- I will have precuts for new fabric lines introduced at International Quilt Market that you won't see in stores until September/October ;o)
Quilts will be on display that I have made for the holidays -- and just for fun. Okay ... so you still need another reason to come out! Well, Danielle Andrews of Antique Recreation will be there with items for display and purchase. If you have not seen Danielle's work you will want to find out who she is. This woman can seriously take any old item and bring it back to life! She is amazing and I am always looking for a project for her to do for me because she's that good. So if you are in the mood for a new piece of furniture or some cool decoration you will want to stop by.
We will be at the Community Center from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. So just to recap ... Trunk Show, demos, notions, patterns, fabric, quilt kits, furniture and decorations .... (and don't forget drawings and prizes)!
Okay I've put it all out there but I still have one more card to play ... my sister, Julie, has offered to help me with the refreshments. Well that should start your mouth watering right there! Cookies, cakes, who knows what else she might come up with ...
I think that's all. See you on the 26th!

Double Slice Quilt by Missouri Star Quilt Company
Have you all seen the demonstration for the "Double Slice" by Missouri Star Quilt Company? Well if you haven't, you should take a look. Here's the link --
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxC-0T5lXw4
I was able to finally finish my project and I love it. It goes together so well, is a great beginner project, but would work well for anyone wanting to make something quick for a gift or for themselves. I added a border to mine to make it a little more "lap friendly" meaning I wanted it a little larger to snuggle under. The quilt measured approximately 55" x 62" before the border. I used an additional 3/4 yard - 4 1/2" strips, and my completed project is 63" x 70".
For my project I used the Honky Tonk layer cake -- and I could make a dozen or more because they are so fun and showcase your fabrics so well.
Of course, I was going to do a "step by step" for you, but I am having electronic photo difficulties -- which totally means I don't know what I'm doing and having trouble with photos ....
So I will share with you what I do have and hope you can get the jist of it ...
Step 1: Take your layer cake and cut a 3 1/2" strip off of one side of each 10" square. That will leave you with a 6 1/2" x 10" piece remaining. Cut all 42 of your layer cake squares in this manner. Stack the pieces from top to bottom or the way they came in your square. In the picture below, the 3 1/2" x 10" side is up and the 6 1/2" x 10" side is facing down so the bottom fabric shows in the picture -- it's just flipped over.
Step 2: Take a 3 1/2" strip and pair it with a 6 1/2" strip from the opposite side (pairing the rectangle that is right side up with the rectangle that is wrong side up). You will continue doing this with all rectangles. If you run into a snag where you have the same colors or your pattern is too busy just switch it out with something more desirable to your taste. Once the pairs are matched up (believe me it's much funner than matching socks) sew them together. You will have a block like the one pictured below. You will want to sew your 84 slices together and you will once again have 42 squares although they won't really be square any longer.
The next step is to cut the squares measuring across the 10" side in half, leaving you with two 5"slices (photo above0. You will do the same thing with your piles, flip one side over and the other up and work from opposite ends to sew your blocks back together. I don't have a photo of this because of my electronic difficulties, but as you can see from the blocks in the photo below you will switch sides, so you have a small rectangle on one end and a long rectangle on the other and the other side of your block is just opposite. I hope I haven't lost you yet. Play with your fabrics, look at the photo and you will know just what I mean!! Once you have sewn your 84 pieces back together into 42 squares, you will lay them out in a manner pleasing to you, do a little arranging and possibly rearranging and then sew them all together in rows and then the rows together. I did 6 blocks across by 7 down (42 blocks woo hoo!)
Here's a picture of the blocks all sewn together before I added the border. I didn't have to do very much rearranging to make sure I had a good mix of color spread throughout the quilt. I love it!
The quilt is a good size right now, but I love how my little border just framed it and added a little more size. I used 1 7/8 yards of two pieces for my back, but I would really recommend just going with 4 yards. It will make it easier for you and give your long arm quilter plenty to work with.
Because I love this project so much and know you will too, I am offering 10% off layer cakes through Friday, March 21, 2014. That makes them $29.03 -- and that's a steal if you ask me! So to go my etsy shop and have fun selecting! All you need to do is pick a designer or something in a style/color you know you like and you will love it -- I PROMISE!!
One of my quilring friends I have a dear friend who asked me if this would work with a charm pack -- I believe it would and I'm going to try it out ... I will let you know if it's a yay or nay in a few days.
Have fun sewing and if you happen to make a Double Slice quilt, please send me a picture I would love to share it!!!

The latest craze!
I try and read several quilter's blogs so I can follow what is going on in the quilting world. They inspire me, teach me new things and help me reach outside of the box myself as we all get stuck in a rut sometimes of not feeling creative enough!
I noticed this week that the latest craze is called "Jelly Roll Jam" which is a pattern put out by Fat Quarter Shop -- and it's free! We will have some copies available at our open house on Saturday ;o) We have many of the fabrics pictured below in our shop -- or similar designs. Or, reach outside of your box and use something you love! A Moda jelly roll will make 2 baby quilts ... which means a Riley Blake rolie polie would make 1 baby quilt -- my head is spinning with the ideas!

Scrumptious and Pot Luck
So excited to announce the arrival of Scrumptious by Bonnie and Camille and Pot Luck by American Jane. Bonnie and Camille's fabric lines are so beautiful. This particular line has gorgeous aqua, orange, green, red and pink. Their fabrics always please and since they are local to us Idaho folk it is even more exciting!
You can see why it's called Scrumptious! |
American Jane is an all time favorite as well. I think I am particular fond of them because they often have little farm prints or flowers that remind me of growing up. We are so fast paced and technological today, they remind me of simpler times.
Daisies, baby chicks and numbers -- so reminds me of being a little girl on the farm again! |

Enjoy!

Chevy Daze for a baby girl
This week I pieced together and quilted a Chevy Daze pattern for a customer. She was giving it as a gift today at a baby shower. This fabric is "Spring House" by Moda. It is so soft and feminine. Rather than just quilt the Chevron in the center, I added a little ruffly border to each one. Love the way it turned out. If you look close you can see it on the back.
It started raining right when I was ready to take pictures or I would have tried to get a better close up of the front. Being it turned into a rainy day here I spent more time in my quilting room and straightening the shop some. We have this sweet little vintage wooden ironing board that we are using for a display. Thought I would share a picture of it -- matches the Mimi yardage perfect.
I think I am going to sit down tonight, put my feet up and do some stitching. These patterns for dish towels came in this week and I can't wait to make one up. Which one would you make? Animal Stackers or Fresh Picked, I love them both. Hmmmm.....
Happy sewing or stitchin' or whatever you are doing this weekend!

We have new additions!
Olie and I had an absolute blast at our jelly roll demonstration last night with some very wonderful and fun ladies. Olie did a wonderful job on her demonstration which she kept reminding me was very out of her comfort zone. She did so good I am sure she will have no problem doing LOTS more. She also demonstrated our new Olfa cutting mat which the ladies LOVED! We had several requests for the mat in a 17" size and have ordered some of those and they will be in stock soon. The ladies got a sneak peek of some projects in the work for our demonstration on July 16th -- more details soon!
Christmas packages arrived again this week (okay so it's like Christmas to us opening the boxes to reveal what's inside)! We received our charm packs in Baby Jane. This would make an absolutely adorable baby quilt. The colors are aqua, red, grey, mustard and creamy white. We also have jelly rolls on order as well as some yardage for backs and binding.
Boy Crazy arrived as well and we have fat quarter bundles which would be perfect for our Chevy Daze pattern! Lots of yardage in this one for some other fun projects as well ... pajamas, pillowcases, baby quilts ... you name it. Love the prints and colors in teal, orange, yellow, gray (I keep oooiiing and aaawwing over the diamonds).
We now have Gift Certificates that you can purchase from us to give for any reason under the sun you can find! Let us know if you are interested. And, for those of you who don't quilt but might like to do some handwork, or if you do both, we have something new coming in the very near future so check back ;o)
That's it for this week -- I will be sequestering myself in the room with my long arm quilting machine this weekend -- except for the very fun time I get to spend with my grandkids (yeah) -- I wonder what trouble we can stir up!

Happy first day of summer (I'm wearing a fleece jacket) ;o(

Breaking News!
Olie and I got our first LARGE shipment of fabric in this week. At least it was large for us and we have been like excited little school girls ever since. We worked very hard one night this week playing fabric store. This is what we came up with!
A bookshelf converted into a display case holding the new fabrics from Adorn It, "Nested Owls Coral" and "Wildflowers." This fabric could be made into soooo many projects. We will be bundling up some quilt kits and fat quarter bundles from this line. We also have 5 x 5 and 10 x 10 stacker squares. A pattern book for these darling fabrics should be arriving soon! These items will be on out etsy site and if you would like to come by and visit us in person let us know! We don't have regular hours yet but hope too soon.
The doll cradle is now holding baby quilts for purchase ---- just had to share it's so sweet.
And the front entry has a place to display patterns, notions and more precuts!
Just a reminder our jelly roll demonstration is June 20th at 7:00 (3472 East 400 North, Lewisville, Idaho). Have a great Flag Day and Father's Day Weekend.
